The answer is twofold. The first lies in the dimensions The wheelbase is 34 mm (about 1 1/2”) different. The overall length is 105 mm (about 4”) longer. The published overall width for the CCKW is with the cargo bed rather than the outside of the wheels. The CCKW is 89 mm (about 3 1/2”) wider so the wheels will be even closer.
The second reason is the construction of the Kfz. 72 itself. It is slab sided and has little or no compound curves to deal with other than the fenders. The fenders can be patched together using available preformed trailor parts.
