Feldpost 1011002

Every unit down to the company level in the German Army had a unique Feldpost number. This functioned as an “address” for mail. As the various units were transferred, only the Reichspost had to update the address. This had added security benefits as any captured mail didn’t have a readable address on it. Units had their Feldpost numbers changed periodically to further enhance security

This information has been compiled from surviving army records and original letters in private collections. Some are in our collection and others are in various private collections. Monsieur Romain Gomes has provided a lot of this information and we thank him sincerely.

Individual Feldpost numbers were assigned to battalions within each regiments. A letter suffix was used to designate each company within the battalion.
