The Feld Fu series of radio was introduced as a short range tactical radio. It is a self-contained, light weight, backpack radio designed to attach directly to the Y-Straps.
The Bakelite case helped reduce the weight and minimize interference. Due to the brittle nature of Bakelite, the case has a number of reinforcing ribs to add strength. This led to a very complex mold. The covers were designed so the operator could operate the radio with the covers in place making for an all-weather set.
The b and c models operate at over 100 Mhz putting them outside the operating frequencies of all other German tactical radios. This meant the they could only be used within infantry formations. Panzergrenadiers were issued the f model which operated between 32 and 38 Mhz. This was the same frequency range as the 10 Watt transmitter and Uk.w. E reciever pair. This was the pair most commonly found in armored vehicles.
